Accounting for approximately 25% of the world’s total economic activity, the manufacturing sector is integral to the global economy, traditionally being a sturdy and labour intensive sector.

Notwithstanding functional and geographic diversity, most manufacturers are currently facing similar challenges. Increasing raw material, energy and labour costs are eroding operating margins, forcing segment participants to rethink their business strategies, frequently opting for off-shoring. In response, increased restructuring within the sector can be seen, resulting in mergers, acquisitions and divestitures. Merger activity will further shape the competitive landscape, and companies that do not manage to sustain their position are doomed to failure.
